Love and Tears (Surrender) is the 9th fragrance in the Black Masterpiece / LOeuvre Noire series. It is a unisex jasmine soliflore; ingredients include bergamot, petit grain, cypress, jasmine, orange blossom, ylang ylang and ciste. In addition, Love and Tears, Surrender is composed exclusively with the Absolute Jasmine from India, a Jasmine with strong orange blossom undertones.

The name of "Love and Tears Surrender" conjures up a mysterious, smoky, gloomy 80's soundtrack of Siouxsie Sioux & Robert Smith, dripping with smudged-eyeliner angst.

Surprisingly, it's quite joyful and pretty, an "ode to jasmine". My initial reaction was how similar it smelled to J'Adore, Dior's feminine floral, with the jasmine pushed up and the rose pulled back. In fact, it most closely resembles J'Adore L'Absolu, a limited edition edp with the jasmine note amplified.

Not surprisingly, Calice Becker is the perfumer behind both J'Adore and Love & Tears. Hmmm.

I compared it to the other great jasmine, Serge Lutens A la Nuit, and found that A La Nuit gives the impression of a soliflore, but Love and Tears is more multifaceted, with the orange blossom and other notes adding a sparkling quality that is still big and heady, yet shimmers and flirts with a more youthful insouciance.
